“VIP” virtual learning program launched by CPSB

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – Using knowledge gained during the pandemic, the Calcasieu Parish School Board is finding new ways to offer a variety of advanced courses in each high school in the parish.

The “virtual instruction program” is made available to high school students the opportunity to enroll in various advanced courses, without ever having to leave their school.

“Trying to be a step ahead of what we can offer students and have them succeed each time they leave us,” said Dr. Doug DeVillier, VIP Coordinator. “Being part of a virtual classroom while you’re still in high school is going to give them a head start because they’re going to really benefit from it, they’re going to learn the skills they need.”

The Virtual Education Program or “VIP” gives high school students across the district the opportunity to take 6 different STEM courses, 14 dual-enrollment courses in partnership with SOWELA, and 8 other high school offerings such as Criminal Justice and Physics, all taught by certified teachers. in the parish.. and all without having to leave their own school.

“They would just have to tap into our resources, go into the virtual lab if you want, and it’ll be right at that particular time that they want to take the virtual tutorial course,” Dr. DeVillier said.

It is also a program that gives students from across the parish an equal opportunity to succeed. “To be able to give every school exactly the same offerings is a game-changer,” Dr. DeVillier said. “I’m really going to give them the opportunity to really take classes that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to take on their campus.”

This new program was prompted by the national teacher shortage, as well as the success of virtual teaching during the pandemic. But unlike previous virtual options, “VIP” does not lock students into an entirely virtual setting.

“You could take face-to-face English classes at your school. when that bell rings and you go into second period, you can walk into that virtual lab and take that physics class that’s not offered on your campus,” Dr. DeVillier said.

The program will be run from the Lake Charles Boston Academy of Learning, but students from all 11 Calcasieu Parish high schools can enroll.
