WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) – If you’re shopping for the holidays for teens who love games, it can be nearly impossible to fulfill their holiday wishes.
At Warpzone Video Games in Winona, owner Wyatt Russell isn’t having much luck.
“When it comes to consoles, that’s definitely a huge deal. We’ve had probably a thousand people asking if we have one (PlayStation 5), and we have to say no every time,” Russell said. .
“We’ve only had one used PS5 since it was released,” he said. “And getting new ones is basically impossible. The only way we get PS5s is the way everyone else gets them: buy them online from other retailers. »
Russell isn’t the only one. Game stores nationwide are frustrated.
“A regular PS5 that plays discs sells for $499 anyway. I think most people would consider that to be a fair price based on what consoles have done in the past. But finding one for $499 is next to impossible,” Russell said.
Such a shortage is typical for a few months immediately after a release, but the XBox Series X and PlayStation 5 have been out for over a year.
“We’re already a year away – over a year … if you want to buy one from Amazon or Ebay, it’s almost double that,” Russell said.
Chip shortages and vendors grabbing consoles on limited builds are to blame.
Those looking to buy one of these consoles, or even the all-new Nintendo Switch, might as well wait, Russell said.
“If you can live with your last generation console – your PS4, your XBOX one – that’s what I would recommend,” Russell said.
Russell also said that due to such demand, older consoles are also harder to find and are no cheaper than when they were the last model.
