Game to be released on
The new RPG-lite narrative game will be released for Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam) on
In this poignant narrative game inspired by real events, the Danish village of Tinglev is under German occupation during World War II. Players will follow the path of
One day, Gerda returns home from the clinic where she works as a nurse. She notices blood upon entering the house and soon discovers that her husband, Anders, is arrested by the Gestapo. He left behind important resistance documents, and it seems that many Danish and German lives will depend on his next actions.
A story told not on the front line, but in the intimate setting of the small Danish village Gerda lived her whole life.
Armed only with her wits, compassion, and insight, her advantage as a civilian is knowledge of her community and village. Gerda’s personality traits are her skills, and her connection to others will also determine how the story unfolds. Choices are made through a mixture of exploration and dialogue, as well as the management of resources and relationships. Every day, she writes her experiences and the actions she has taken in her journal, which players will use to develop aspects of her personality to allow Gerda to handle situations in different ways.
She’ll encounter a wide range of characters throughout the game: her fellow villagers – both ethnic Danes and Germans – as well as members of the Resistance and Nazi occupiers. Every interaction carries weight and every decision is crucial in times of unrest and war. With lives at stake, your morals will be tested and your beliefs compromised…how far would you go to protect your loved ones?
DONTNOD is honored to work with PortaPlay to bring this untold story to life. The character of Gerda is inspired by a real Danish resistance fighter and grandmother of PortaPlay head of development, Hans von Knut Skovfoged.
“This game is important to us because it is inspired by true stories from the Second World War, including those of my grandmother. With Gerda, we hope to share an accurate vision of some of the struggles of the occupied populations at that time and highlight that some people were faced with difficult choices that defied absolute judgment. Through this narrative game we hope to foster the sharing of testimonies. We know that there are many civilian stories that are not told in wars and occupations around the world, many of which are still in the midst of theirs right now. And we are happy to be able to tell at least one of those stories, with Gerda: A Flame in Winter. shares Hans von Knut Skovfoged, Head of development at PortaPlay.
